Australia's mandatory climate reporting is rolling out in three waves, and the first question every company asks is the same: when does this actually become our problem? You're in a group if you meet at least two of its three thresholds.
The groups
- Group 1 – consolidated revenue over $500 million, gross assets over $1 billion, or 500 or more employees. Already reporting, for financial years that began on or after 1 January 2025.
- Group 2 – revenue over $200 million, assets over $500 million, or 250 or more employees. First reports cover financial years beginning on or after 1 July 2026, which means the first reporting year is already underway for July to June reporters.
- Group 3 – revenue over $50 million, assets over $25 million, or 100 or more employees. Reporting starts for financial years beginning on or after 1 July 2027.
Three things that surprise people
It's two of three, not all three. Plenty of companies with modest revenue are caught by assets plus headcount.
Group 2's first year leaves less runway than it looks. Governance, data and risk assessment take longer than a reporting season, so the work starts well before the report is due.
Group 3 companies without material climate risks can make a statement to that effect instead of full disclosures. You still need to do the assessment to back it up, and that assessment is most of the work.
